The siege of Turin in 1706
In 1706, during the War of the Spanish Succession, 45,000 French and Spanish soldiers surrounded Turin. Continuous bombardments with stone balls and incendiary bombs put the civilian population's resistance to the test every day, while a gruelling and relentless war was fought in the complex labyrinth of underground tunnels. It was in the tunnels of the Cittadella, a historic fortress that still stands in the city centre today, that the symbolic episode of the entire siege took place when, on the night between 29 and 30 August, Pietro Micca, one of the miner soldiers, blew up the gate with explosives in an attempt to stop the enemy assault, killing himself.
The liberation and the roots of the Kingdom of Savoy
The Piedmontese soldiers fought for 117 days before liberating Turin. As one of the few European capitals to have been besieged in such a scientific manner, the episode had international resonance. The siege ended with the battle of 7 September, in which the troops led by Victor Amadeus II and Prince Eugene of Savoy forced the enemy to flee. The Basilica of Superga, one of the symbols of the city, was built as a sign of gratitude.
